Is it easy to move out of a PadSplit?

August 14, 2025

One of the biggest benefits of living in a PadSplit is the flexibility. Whether you’re relocating for work, starting a new chapter, or simply ready for a change, moving out is straightforward. The process is designed to work around your timeline, not tie you down with a long lease or complicated paperwork.

Here’s everything you need to know to make your move-out smooth, stress-free, and smart for your budget.

Want a change of scenery? Consider a free transfer

Before you schedule your move-out, it’s worth exploring whether a transfer might be a good fit. Every PadSplit member gets one free transfer, no matter how long you’ve been in your current home. A transfer can be a great option if you’d like to live in a different neighborhood, be closer to work or school, or try a home with amenities or house rules that better match your preferences.

With a transfer, you keep your payment history, flexibility, and connection to the PadSplit community. You can browse other available homes at any time by logging into your Member Dashboard and selecting the “Room Transfer” section. If you think you might want to transfer, start looking early so you have the best choice of available rooms.

Review your commitment period first

Before scheduling a move-out, it’s essential to review your commitment period so you understand whether you’ll face any early move-out fees.

If you booked the standard 12-week plan, moving out before your commitment ends results in a penalty equal to two weeks of dues. If you chose the Flexibility Upgrade, you can move out at any time without penalty. You can check your exact commitment terms in the “Finances” section of your Member Dashboard or by reviewing PadSplit’s minimum commitment guide.

How to schedule your move-out

Once you’ve reviewed your commitment period, scheduling your move-out is quick and straightforward. Simply log in to your Member Dashboard, scroll to the “Move-Out” section, and click “Request Move-Out.” From there, you’ll select your preferred date and confirm the request.

Same-day move-outs aren’t available, so it’s best to plan ahead. Giving yourself extra time also ensures you can coordinate movers or transportation if needed. If your plans change after you schedule, you can cancel your move-out request anytime before the scheduled date directly from your dashboard.

What happens with your refund

PadSplit members pay weekly or biweekly, so your refund depends on the timing of your departure.

Moving out in the middle of your payment cycle means you won’t receive a refund for unused days within that period. However, you will be refunded for any prepaid days beyond your current billing cycle. If you’re on a biweekly payment plan and move out during the first seven days, you’ll receive a partial refund for the second week. Refunds take about one week to process, and you must complete the move-out form in your dashboard to receive one.

To get the most value, many members choose to schedule their move-out for the day after their dues day and check out by 9:00 AM. You can review the full refund policy here.

What to do on move-out day

Your move-out day will go smoothly if you prepare in advance. Pack up all of your belongings, clean your room thoroughly, and check any instructions from your host for home-specific expectations. Before you leave, take two clear photos—one of your clean room and one showing where you left the key, if applicable—and upload them to your dashboard. Then complete the move-out form and confirm your departure. If you have any remaining balance, be sure to settle it before you leave.

Decided to stay? Cancel your move-out

If your plans change and you want to keep your room, PadSplit makes it easy to stay. You can cancel your move-out request any time before your scheduled date by returning to the “Move-Out” section of your dashboard and selecting “Cancel Move-Out.” If you decide to stay on your actual move-out day, you’ll need to rebook your room like a new member, so it’s best to cancel ahead of time.

Need a letter of recommendation?

If you’re moving into a new rental, you may qualify for a letter of recommendation from PadSplit. Members with a solid payment history, a Member Score of 3 or higher, and no outstanding balances or violations can download their letter directly from the dashboard under Settings > Registration. You’ll have access to this letter even after you move out, as long as it’s within 90 days. Learn more about letters of recommendation.

Plan your next step before moving out

If you’re moving to another city, starting a new job, or making another big change, it’s worth taking time to plan what comes next before your move-out date. Securing your next housing early can help you avoid gaps in housing or last-minute stress. Some members choose to line up another PadSplit home right away, while others use their letter of recommendation to move into a traditional rental.

Think about your priorities—whether that’s staying close to your current neighborhood, finding a place with specific amenities, or moving closer to work or school—and start your search with those in mind. By knowing where you’ll be living next, you can focus on packing, saying your goodbyes, and enjoying a smooth transition.
