PadSplit: What it is, how it works, and what it can do for you

April 21, 2026

If you’re a renter, you’ve likely struggled to pay rent at least once, maybe even more. Maybe you’re struggling right now.

You may have had to choose between buying groceries and paying your landlord. Maybe you had to skip going to the doctor or putting gas in your car.

You work hard—day in, day out, no breaks, no breathing room. Maybe you’re juggling two jobs, a side hustle, or both, just to keep the lights on. And still, your rent has gone up.

You’re not alone; your story is common. It’s the norm. It now affects half of all renters in the U.S.

An view of multiple houses in a suburban neighborhood.

According to a 2026 analysis of U.S. census data, 51.8% of all renter households in the country are cost-burdened, spending more than 30% of their income on rent (Apartmentlist, 2026).

Since the start of the pandemic, the typical U.S. asking rent has climbed 35.6% (Zillow, 2025), and wages have failed to keep pace in 44 of the 50 largest metros (StreetEasy/Zillow, 2024). For millions of renters, the gap between what they earn and what housing costs has never been wider. We have a crisis.

The bad news: Rents are increasing.

The good news: Options are available.

Whether you’re starting over in a new city, trying to save money, or want to live closer to work, this guide will walk you through exactly how PadSplit is designed for you and how it works, what living in a PadSplit shared home is like, and how to decide if it’s the right fit for you.

Book a room, move in as early as tomorrow

What is PadSplit?

PadSplit is a shared housing platform that makes affordable housing accessible without the traditional barriers—no long-term leases, no large security deposits, and no minimum credit requirements. CEO Atticus LeBlanc founded the company in 2017 after entering an affordable housing competition in Atlanta, GA, driven by his frustration with the lack of affordable options across the country. His solution: a rent-by-the-room model that unlocks affordable housing by making better use of existing, underutilized homes.

With over 30,000 rooms in 40+ cities (as of March, 2026), PadSplit has housed more than 70,000 people. These residents often move on to buy new cars, pay off debt, and purchase homes. With PadSplit, they move in and move up.

Where is PadSplit located?

PadSplit operates in over 40 cities across the United States, including Atlanta, Austin, Jacksonville; Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Miami. We have room rentals in prime locations where housing is often unaffordable to ensure our residents can live closer to work and job opportunities.

PadSplit vs. Airbnb vs. traditional apartments

An exterior view of luxury apartments.

If you’ve looked at similar housing options, you might be wondering how PadSplit compares. Here’s how it stacks up against some of the most common alternatives.

PadSplit vs. Airbnb

Founded in 2008, Airbnb is designed for short-term stays, like weekend getaways and travel. Cleaning fees, service charges, and deposits associated with the platform add up fast, making it an expensive and impractical option for anyone who needs stable, longer-term housing.

PadSplit is built for something different—affordable housing with no lengthy leases, security deposits, or added utility fees. Just flexibility and a place to live well while keeping more money in your pocket. Put simply, Airbnb is for getaways. PadSplit is for real life.

PadSplit vs. traditional apartments

Traditional apartments come with significant upfront costs and strict requirements that put housing out of reach for many people. PadSplit eliminates many of those barriers—no first and last month’s rent, no large security deposit, no minimum credit score, and no long-term lease. The numbers speak for themselves: the average cost to move into a traditional apartment is around $4,950. The average cost to move into a PadSplit is just $258.

Apartments often require a one- to two-month wait to move in. With PadSplit, residents can move in as early as tomorrow. Whether you’re in a bind, need a fresh start, or can’t find affordable rentals elsewhere, we’re here to provide immediate housing to accommodate your needs and situation.

In short, PadSplit removes the barriers that make housing stressful and expensive, giving you a flexible, affordable way to live on your own terms.

Living in a PadSplit shared home as a member

PadSplits are designed to offer the comfort of home while living with others. Here’s a closer look at the spaces that make up your new home.

What are PadSplit homes like?

While every PadSplit home is different, all share the same core features. All PadSplit members have a private, fully furnished room with a keypad-locked door for security, and access to a shared kitchen and private or shared bathroom. Laundry services are also often included, although not every PadSplit home has this amenity. With varying room sizes and styles, PadSplit makes it easy to find the right place for your lifestyle and preferences.

A typical day living in a PadSplit room for rent

If you’ve never lived in shared housing before with other housemates, it’s normal to wonder what the experience is really like day to day. While every home is different, most PadSplit members find a rhythm quickly.

In most homes, daily routines naturally space themselves out. People tend to have different work schedules, so kitchens and bathrooms are often used at different times. Mornings and evenings might have some overlap, but they rarely feel overcrowded. Some members meal prep for the week, while others cook day to day. It’s a mix, just like any household where families live together.

The social dynamic can vary, too. Some PadSplit homes are more social, where members chat, share meals, or hang out occasionally. Others are quieter, where people mostly keep to themselves. Both are completely normal—the key is that you can choose how much you want to interact.

While you share spaces like kitchens and sometimes bathrooms, your room is entirely your own. When you need to unwind or have time to yourself, you can lock your door and relax in a private, fully furnished space. Every PadSplit bedroom includes a keypad lock, adding an extra layer of security and peace of mind.

For many members, the biggest surprise about PadSplit is how quickly it starts to feel normal. Less like shared housing and more like having a place of your own within a home. If that sounds like the kind of home you’re looking for, here’s how to get started.

How do I apply to live in a PadSplit room for rent?

PadSplit’s site makes it simple for property owners to list homes and for prospective residents to find an affordable room anywhere in the country. If you’re thinking about moving into a PadSplit, here’s what the process looks like.

The membership application process

The first step in renting a PadSplit room is filling out an application on our website. To get started, just click the “Apply now” button on the listing for the room you’d like to book.

You’ll need a government-issued photo ID and proof of income, such as bank statements showing recurring deposits or pay stubs from your employer. Once submitted, our team will review your application in minutes. The application fee is just $19, and if you’re not accepted for any reason, it’s almost always refunded.

Now that we’ve covered how to apply, let’s walk through what PadSplit actually costs.

How much does it cost to live in a PadSplit?

PadSplit’s pricing structure is designed to be transparent, without hefty fees or security deposits. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect:

  • Application fee: As mentioned above, you’ll pay a $19 application fee when you apply.
  • Move-in fee: Each PadSplit host sets a move-in fee. While these vary, they’re usually around $100.
  • Member dues: Your PadSplit membership dues are your weekly room rate. You’ll be required to pay for the first week of your room before you move in. This rate will vary if you:
    • Customize your due date. If you choose to pay on a different day of the week from the day you move in, we’ll adjust your first membership dues accordingly.
    • Pay biweekly. In this case, we’ll adjust your rate to cover the first two weeks of your rent.

Room rates start at around $132 per week with utilities and Wi-Fi included, though rates vary by city, room size, and features.

PadSplit welcomes applicants from a wide range of backgrounds. Our eligibility requirements exist to protect the safety and comfort of every member in our community. Here’s what we look for:

Age

You must be 18 years of age or older.

Background screening

All prospective PadSplit members undergo a background screening. Consistent with fair housing guidance from HUD, PadSplit does not disqualify membership for arrests. However, a criminal history that poses a safety risk may affect your eligibility. This includes recent felonies within the last seven years, violent crimes, and property crimes, particularly arson or severe damage. We evaluate each application individually, considering the severity of the offense, the time elapsed, and the demonstrated rehabilitation.

Rental history

We review your rental history to help ensure a reliable shared living environment. A pattern of late payments, multiple recent evictions, property damage, or lease violations may affect your eligibility. That said, if you’ve had past rental challenges but can demonstrate improved financial stability, we encourage you to apply anyway—we evaluate each situation on its own merits.

Identity verification

All applicants must have a valid, U.S.-issued government ID and provide either a Social Security Number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Applicants with a valid U.S. visa may also apply.

Income verification

You’ll need to demonstrate a reliable income sufficient to cover your weekly payments. Your application may be affected if your income is inconsistent, doesn’t meet the affordability threshold for the room you’re applying for, or if your employment history reflects a lack of job stability.

Credit history

PadSplit doesn’t require a minimum credit score, but we do check your credit history. We perform a soft-pull credit check that should not affect your FICO score. Having no credit history is perfectly fine and will not prevent you from becoming a PadSplit member.

A note on honesty

False information in your application will lead to denial. Please be upfront and honest, as our team verifies all details. Additionally, if you are a returning member with an outstanding balance, please resolve that balance before reapplying. We cannot approve you for membership until all previous balances are paid.

Are there income requirements to become a PadSplit member?

Unlike traditional apartments, PadSplit doesn’t require you to earn three times the amount of your rent. Instead, we verify your current income to determine a weekly room rate that keeps your housing costs manageable.

How does PadSplit verify income?

If you don’t have a traditional 9-5 job, don’t worry! We understand that income looks different for everyone. Whether you’re self-employed, receiving government assistance, or working part-time, we accept a wide range of income sources, including:

  • Employment (part-time or full-time)
  • Government benefits (unemployment, disability, Social Security, etc.)
  • Self-employment income
  • Recurring deposits (such as child support, alimony, or regular family support)

There are two ways to verify your income:

1. Automatic verification with Plaid.

  • This is the fastest way to verify your income. Simply connect your bank account to Plaid, a secure, encrypted technology service trusted by many major banks and platforms, including Venmo.

2. Document upload. If you prefer not to use Plaid, you can also verify your income by uploading a few important documents. These include:

  • Pay stubs from your employer
  • Bank statements showing regular deposits
  • Deposit records for independent contractors
  • Award letters for Social Security, disability benefits, or other assistance programs

If you don’t have income documentation or are currently between jobs, you may still qualify for PadSplit membership through our up–front 12-week payment option. Simply tell us the weekly rate you’d like to pay, and we’ll multiply it by 12 to calculate your total.

Once payment is received, you’re approved to book any room within your approval amount. This option is currently only available in select cities—email documents@padsplit.com to find out if it’s available near you.

Logistics of living in a PadSplit shared home

After you’re approved for membership, it’s time to move in and get comfortable. Here’s a quick look at the practical side of living in a PadSplit.

How long can you stay in a PadSplit?

PadSplit is designed to offer flexibility and meet you where you are. Our standard option is a 12-week commitment period. This duration allows you to settle in, get to know the area if you’re unfamiliar with it, and experience the benefits of mid-term housing.

Want to stay longer than 12 weeks? Great! As long as you maintain your payments, there is no limit to how long you can stay in a PadSplit. In fact, the average PadSplit resident actually stays about nine months.

If you need even more flexibility, our Premium Flexibility Upgrade ($175) gives you the option to move out before your 12-week commitment period ends. Keep in mind that the platform-wide minimum stay is 31 days.

Booking a PadSplit room as a couple

A young African American couple high-five in front of a laptop.

While most PadSplit rooms are designed for single occupancy, some hosts offer rooms for multiple occupants.

To search for a couple’s room, apply the “Allow multiple occupants” filter on your search. We highly recommend closely reading each room listing and checking with your prospective host ahead of time to ensure the room you’re interested in is eligible for multiple occupants.

When applying for a room as a couple, both people must be PadSplit members and pass our application screening. Only the person booking the room is required to verify income.

The PadSplit transfer process

If you’d like to move to a different PadSplit, whether for a change of scenery, different roommates, or a new area, transfers are available for all PadSplit members. Your first transfer is completely free, making it easy to move to a different PadSplit. After that, you’ll pay your new host’s move-in fee for any additional transfers. To initiate a transfer, just contact our member support team.

What do I need to bring to my PadSplit?

A woman unpacking boxes in a PadSplit living room.

PadSplit rooms come fully-furnished, so you won’t need to source or move any major furniture. However, you do need to bring a few things for your PadSplit stay. Residents need to bring linens, such as sheets and towels, kitchen supplies, and cleaning supplies.

You’re also welcome to personalize your space with small items like a lamp, side table, mini-fridge, or TV. We encourage members to make their room feel like home. Due to space constraints, large furniture pieces cannot be accommodated. For safety reasons, space heaters and bedroom cooking appliances, such as microwaves and hot plates, are not permitted.

Are there membership rules in PadSplit shared homes?

PadSplit is a shared living environment, and maintaining a respectful atmosphere is important to everyone in the home. All members are expected to follow these community standards, including:

  • Quiet time: From 11 PM to 9 AM, please keep noise to a minimum. This includes no slamming doors, loud music, or disruptive conversation.
  • Cleaning: Members are responsible for keeping shared spaces clean. Coordinating a cleaning schedule with your housemates is a great way to stay on top of this each week.
  • Smoking: Smoking is not allowed within your PadSplit. Additionally, anything that produces smoke, such as candles, is also prohibited for safety reasons.
  • Guests: By default, guests are not permitted. However, your host may choose to allow them. Check your property’s House Rules section on the listing page to confirm the guest policy.

Each host may add or adjust house rules for their specific property. You can review these before booking by scrolling to the “House Rules” section of any room listing. The full list of PadSplit membership rules is available on our website.

Now that you know how PadSplit works, let’s take a look at what it can offer you.

How to use PadSplit to advance and move up in life

Photo shows three young PadSplit renters smiling happy using laptop and credit card sitting on the sofa at home.

When you rent a room in a PadSplit, you’re getting more than just a room. We believe housing should be a vehicle for financial empowerment and a foundation for building the life you want. Here are a few of the ways PadSplit has helped over 70,000 residents..

Affordability

Affordability is the main benefit of PadSplit. Our room rates are 40-50% lower than those of traditional apartments. Plus, they include Wi-Fi, utilities, and often laundry access (in some homes), removing additional fees that increase your monthly living expenses.

Lower living expenses allow PadSplit members to pay off debt, save money, build businesses, and get back on their feet. On average, PadSplit members save around $317 per month compared to renting alone.

Angela, a chemistry lab technician, experienced just how life-changing these savings can be after relocating to Houston for her career. She found it nearly impossible to find housing that was affordable, secure, and close to her job. She settled for an extended-stay hotel, but at nearly $2,000 a month, she knew it wasn’t sustainable long-term.

After a friend mentioned PadSplit, Angela booked a room, despite being skeptical. It was what she needed, and more. She saved over $1,000 a month, and was able to make a down payment on a house.

Community in PadSplit shared homes

Two young women sit in a kitchen.

While shared housing can seem intimidating, PadSplit residents often find it’s actually a great way to make lasting friendships. Private rooms give everyone their own space, while shared areas like kitchens create easy opportunities to connect.

Some PadSplit members, like Sunshine, foster this community through events, like Sunday dinners or movie nights. Others, like Alex, appreciate the opportunity to have community on their own terms, without giving up their privacy and alone time.

Whether you’re new to a city or just open to meeting new people, PadSplit offers a natural way to find your community in one place.

Flexibility

Traditional apartments often require leases of a year or more—a commitment that doesn’t work for everyone. Gig workers, travel nurses, and anyone navigating a life transition need housing that moves with them.

At PadSplit, the minimum stay requirement is just 31 days, and there’s no long-term lease required. This gives you the ability to move out on your own schedule, whether you’re moving for your job, relocating closer to family, or simply want a different living arrangement.

Convenience

Between finding a place, furnishing it, and getting settled, moving is a lot of work. PadSplit rooms come fully furnished to eliminate some of that hassle. Members are often able to move in within 24-48 hours of applying for their room, making it a great choice for anyone who needs quality housing quickly.

Move in and move up

A woman walks around a dining room with a suitcase and looks out the window.

With room rates 40–50% below the cost of a traditional apartment, no long-term lease requirements, and utilities and Wi-Fi included, PadSplit’s designed to reduce your financial burden from day one. A streamlined application process, flexible stay lengths, and fully-furnished rooms mean you can spend less time worrying about the logistics of housing and more time focusing on what matters most.

Whether you’re looking to save money, rebuild stability, or simply find a comfortable place to land, PadSplit provides the foundation you need. If you want to join the 70,000+ people who have moved their lives forward with PadSplit, visit padsplit.com to browse available rooms and apply today.
