Living in a shared space can be tricky from time-to-time. There’s no doubt about it. Each of us has our own unique habits and quirks that can be challenging for others to accept. For example, maybe your PadMate takes too long in the bathroom and you always leave the hallway light on at night. These may seem small, but overtime frustration can grow. At PadSplit, we encourage our members to talk with their PadMates when issues come up so that doesn’t happen.
Good communication is an essential part of any relationship, including the one with your PadMate. Most conflicts are the result of miscommunication or lack of communication. Here are some tips to help you communicate effectively and resolve problems when they arise.
Effective communication requires thoughtfulness. Take time to think about the situation and why it bothers you. Then, think about your PadMate and try to see it from their point-of-view. This will help you choose the right words when you talk to them.
Timing is extremely important when having important conversations. You don’t want your PadMate to be caught off-guard and unable to listen to what you have to say. Schedule the conversation for a time when you both aren’t tired after work or just coming home from running errands.
This is why taking time to think before you have the conversation is important. It helps you speak candidly without being harsh or accusatory. For example, “I know you enjoy taking long showers in the morning, but I also need time to get ready for work or I’ll be late. I’d like to work out a schedule so we both have the time we need. What do you think?” In this example, you clearly state the problem, why it needs to be addressed, and invite your PadMate to help work out a solution.
Good communication is a two-way street. After you’ve stated the problem and your proposed solution, give your PadMate time to speak. Listen to what they have to say without interrupting them. If they agree, great! If not, work together to find a solution.
After a solution is found, summarize what you talked about and the solution. This is an important step. It helps ensure you’re both on the same page regarding the problem and how to resolve it moving forward.
Bonus tip: Keep the lines of communication open. It helps build mutual respect and a culture of kindness in the home.
At PadSplit, we want you to be happy. If you’ve made an attempt to resolve problems with your PadMate but haven’t been successful, let us know. We’ll see if we can help.
