Meet Hannah Turner, Head of Market Launch at PadSplit

January 18, 2022

Over the past four years, PadSplit has grown from a handful of team members to more than 100 fully-remote employees located across 18 countries. We’re kicking off a new series of employee spotlights to help you get to know the employees behind the keys.

First up in the PadSplit Employee Spotlight Series: meet Hannah Turner, Head of Market Launch.

Where do you live?

Dallas, TX

When did you join the PadSplit team?

I joined the team in September 2020. I wanted to work at PadSplit because we’re creating a privatized solution to a social issue. When we operationalize well, our Hosts make more money, our Members save more money, and everyone reaches their goals faster. Aligning these incentives takes structure and work, and I can’t think of something more exciting to shape.

What is your favorite core value and why?

My favorite core value is compassionate directness, which could be considered cheating because it can’t exist without two other core values – empathy and self awareness. At PadSplit, we’re doing something that’s never been done before, so disagreeing is the foundation of our progress. We couldn’t grow as quickly as we are without giving and receiving constructive feedback.

Tell us what a day in the life of your role looks like.

A lot has changed since we launched PadSplit in Atlanta. Now we’re in 9 markets across the country with more to come. The best part of Market Launch is that no two days look the same. The hardest part of Market Launch is no two markets look the same. Our team exists to shape a 7-star out of 5-star experience for early Hosts and Members. In some markets, this means helping investors find their first PadSplit property or tackle their first move-in. In others, it means driving a local street team to help raise brand awareness and learn what prospective Members care about in a new city.  Educating early adopters and gaining local context from Hosts and Members helps us ensure operational excellence to get the growth flywheels turning.

What are you working on that you are most excited about? Why?

We are an online marketplace, and we depend on real estate to succeed. You’ve seen the headlines about the housing market. Supply is difficult right now, and demand and supply don’t always exist in equal parts. My team is working to understand what we can control in an inherently uncontrollable market. Can we help Hosts find ‘PadSplittable’ properties faster? Does local marketing matter as much in this city versus another? Answering these questions requires constant and rapid experimentation to understand where our efforts are best spent.

How do you stay engaged with your team in a remote environment? What does collaboration look like in a remote environment?

In my experience, working remotely at PadSplit is different from working remotely at other companies. We turn our video cameras on for every meeting. That way, we can read people’s reactions and emotions the way we might in person. It makes relationship building more organic. Our remote culture also means we can be international. I have friends in Ukraine, Spain, Argentina, and more that I wouldn’t have known without being remote.

In our weekly All Hands meeting as an ice breaker, we ask new employees to share two truths and a lie about themselves for the team to guess. Let’s play with you. Tell us two truths and a lie about yourself.

I can plug my nose with my lips.

I’ve gone viral on Twitter.

I have met Oprah.

Thanks for sharing more about what you do, Hannah! Stay connected with Hannah and PadSplit on LinkedIn.
